Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020
Scanning from background to foreground through an architectural corridor at twilight, the distant background reveals a pale blue-gray sky of early evening, soft and luminous like cool silk, with delicate bare tree branches creating intricate dark patterns against this gentle backdrop, moving forward into the middle distance, a warmly lit interior space glows amber and cream through floor-to-ceiling glass walls, suggesting an inviting destination that feels like approaching candlelight on a cool evening, the architectural corridor itself extends directly toward the listener from this illuminated endpoint, a covered walkway perhaps thirty meters in length with a smooth white ceiling overhead that feels protective like the underside of a shell, to the left, a large dark-framed window or opening reveals a courtyard space with mature trees and rounded sculptural shrubs, their forms soft as gathered clouds resting on the earth, the walkway floor beneath consists of large rectangular stone pavers in deep charcoal gray, smooth and cool as slate, with subtle aggregate texture visible in certain areas, small ground-level lights embedded in the paving create pools of warm golden light at regular intervals like glowing stepping stones marking the path forward, to the right of the walkway, an open landscape zone contains winter-bare trees whose pale trunks are illuminated from below by warm amber uplighting, making them glow like honey against the darkening sky, their branches reaching upward in graceful gestures, between these trees, rounded topiary shrubs and low ornamental grasses create soft textural layers in muted sage and olive tones, the overall atmosphere suggests quiet transition, the hush of evening descending, cool air carrying perhaps the faint mineral scent of stone and the fresh green fragrance of evergreen foliage, the space invites measured footsteps and contemplative pause
The project was designed by UCGD, commissioned by VANKE. And this is VANKE’s first project to implement the standardized module design. The design of the building focuses on making a positive contribution to the surroundings.Because of the narrow site, the project was to create natural surroundings of the building and keep connection in-between. Due to referencing Chinese garden, the walls give the project its own character, which not only lowed the impact of messy environment, but also create many winding paths and framed beautiful spaces.
