Elemental Lounge Living Room and Bar

This rectangular interior photograph presents a dramatic living space divided precisely down the center into contrasting light and dark halves, creating a mirror-image effect that invites careful exploration. Scanning from left to right, the left half of the composition glows with soft ivory tones suggesting morning light through clouds. A large L-shaped sectional sofa in creamy white occupies the foreground, its cushions appearing plush and inviting like freshly fluffed pillows. Before it sits a low white platform table, and closer to the viewer, a small ottoman covered in fluffy white sheepskin resembling fresh snow, supported by white spherical legs arranged vertically. Pale wood flooring extends beneath, smooth as sanded driftwood. Sheer white curtains filter gentle illumination from a window at left, creating an atmosphere of cool, peaceful brightness. Moving rightward across an invisible boundary at center, the scene transforms dramatically into deep charcoal and black tones suggesting twilight or shadow. Here, an identical sectional sofa appears in rich black velvet with the weighted softness of heavy fabric, accompanied by white accent pillows creating striking contrast. A matching black sheepskin ottoman mirrors its white counterpart. Dark wood flooring, smooth as polished slate, extends beneath heavy charcoal drapery cascading from above. Connecting both realms, a spectacular chandelier of perhaps one hundred teardrop-shaped glass pendants suspended on delicate wires descends from white-painted exposed ceiling beams at left transitioning to dark stained beams at right. The glass drops glow warmly like captured candlelight, creating a waterfall effect of luminosity. In the background, decorative metal screens with perforated circular patterns create texture, while organic stone vessels and glittering crystal geodes rest on surfaces throughout, their rough surfaces contrasting with smooth upholstery.

This project was created for Casacor Peru, the most important architecture and interior design exhibition of the Americas. The topic was Planeta Casa, meaning our planet is our home. The inspiration to design this space graphically divided into black and white was to represent day and night during the equinox, when day and night are 12 hours long. The challenge was to achieve harmony working with the most radical contrast in the color palette, dovetailing the contrast using only different textures and materials, and ultimately representing consonance and peace between opposites.
