Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020
This product composition presents the chocolate bar packaging design emerging from its wrapper, positioned at a dynamic diagonal across a gently distressed white-painted wooden surface that shows natural aging with warm golden-tan staining visible between horizontal plank separations, creating an intimate tabletop or rustic counter context. Beginning with spatial orientation, scanning from background to foreground and left to right, the composition places a substantial cacao pod at the left third of the frame, this organic fruit form rendered in luminous golden-amber coloring that graduates through burnt-orange and deeper sienna tones across its surface, with pronounced vertical ridges running lengthwise creating a textured exterior that appears fibrous and substantial, the pod roughly football-shaped and occupying significant visual space perhaps one-quarter of the total frame height, positioned to rest against the white wood surface with its length extending diagonally upward toward the center. Moving rightward and slightly forward in pictorial space, the packaging wrapper occupies the central and right portions of the frame, this rectangular paper or cardboard sleeve lying flat against the surface presenting its primary face decorated in saturated red-orange coloring reminiscent of ripe sunset or cayenne pepper, enriched with darker chocolate-brown mottled patterns creating organic texture across the surface like natural staining or hand-applied pigment, these darker markings reading as expressive gestural marks or perhaps the fibrous interior of cacao pods themselves, establishing immediate visual warmth and appetizing energy. Resting diagonally across this vivid red-orange wrapper lies the chocolate bar itself, molded into eight trapezoidal segments arranged in two parallel columns of four sections each, the chocolate exhibiting deep brown coloring like rich soil or aged wood, with subtle variations across its surface where soft lighting creates gentle highlights on raised edges suggesting smooth polished finish cool to touch, and deeper shadow zones in the recessed separations between segments revealing dimensional depth, each segment precisely geometric with clean beveled edges that catch light creating subtle luminous accents along their angular transitions. The lower-right portion of the wrapper features a black rectangular label panel with cream or ecru-colored typography, the text oriented horizontally and organized in clear hierarchy with script lettering at top suggesting brand name followed by smaller informational text below indicating cacao content percentage and additional product details, this contained graphic element providing contemporary minimalist counterpoint to the organic expressive background while maintaining information clarity. Throughout the composition, particularly concentrated in the upper-right quadrant and scattered along the right edge and into foreground zones, irregular fragments of broken chocolate appear in various sizes ranging from substantial angular pieces showing clean fracture surfaces to smaller granular particles, these scattered elements suggesting the experience of breaking and tasting while adding textural variety and activating otherwise empty zones, the fragments exhibiting the same deep brown coloring as the main bar with varied shadowing defining their three-dimensional form. The color palette translates into sensory experience as warm and inviting, the red-orange of the packaging suggesting ripe fruit warmth or the heat of ground spices, the chocolate brown evoking rich earth after rain or the smooth coolness of polished wood, the golden-amber cacao pod radiating sunshine warmth like honey held to light or autumn leaves backlit at golden hour, while the weathered white background provides cool neutrality like aged linen or sun-bleached driftwood, all unified through soft warm lighting that suggests afternoon sun filtering through windows casting gentle illumination without harsh contrast, creating atmosphere of calm domestic comfort and unhurried appreciation. Texturally, the composition invites multiple tactile imaginings including the smooth almost waxy coolness of molded chocolate that might yield slightly to warm fingertips, the matte slightly fibrous surface of the paper wrapper with subtle tooth that would produce quiet rustling when handled, the pronounced ridged exterior of the cacao pod suggesting organic firmness with fibrous resilience like dried gourd or mature squash, and the distressed painted wood beneath conveying weathered smoothness where paint remains with slightly rougher exposed grain in worn areas, these varied tactile qualities creating rich material orchestration. The lighting arrives from upper left as suggested by shadow directions, this diffused natural daylight quality creating soft-edged shadows beneath the cacao pod and chocolate bar that gently anchor these objects to the supporting surface without harsh definition, the illumination warm in character suggesting late morning or afternoon sun that enhances golden tones and brings warmth to brown hues while maintaining overall clarity and detail, creating atmosphere of natural calm rather than artificial staging, light that invites lingering examination rather than commanding immediate attention. The overall impression conveys careful artisanal craft, honest materials, agricultural authenticity, and the transformation of tropical botanical fruit into refined culinary pleasure, the composition suggesting both rustic origins and contemporary sophistication, immediate sensory appeal balanced with invitation to contemplate origins, processes, and the networks connecting distant growing regions to intimate moments of tasting and enjoyment, the scattered chocolate fragments particularly suggesting the transition from intact geometric precision to organic fragmentation through the act of breaking and consuming, completing a visual narrative that moves from tropical harvest through manufacturing transformation to eventual dissolution in the experience of eating.
The design is inspired by the origin of Dengo's cacao – the heart of the Atlantic Forest in Bahia, Brazil. The cacao is harvested in cabruca, a traditional agroforestry and forest-positive system. In an effort to inspire, create brand recognition and convey the brand's message to the consumer, the designers turned the chocolate bar into a sculpture that represents some of the surrounding elements, such as dry leaves on the ground, foliage of the tall trees that provide beautiful play of light and shadow, and a variety of seeds.
